The Castle of Cabañas is located in the municipality of Cabañas del Castillo in Spain. It originated in the 12th century when it was constructed during the period of Muslim rule in the region. This fortress was erected upon the remains of an earlier Muslim structure, indicating a continuity of strategic importance through successive occupations.

Following the Christian Reconquista in the 14th century, the castle underwent significant reforms and became administratively linked to the nearby town of Trujillo. Subsequent to these changes, it was granted to the noble García Álvarez de Toledo. This transfer incorporated the fortress into the domains of the Lordship of Oropesa and, later, the Marquisate of Jarandilla, reflecting shifts in medieval territorial control and governance in this part of Spain.

Since those medieval times, the castle has transitioned from a military stronghold to a historical relic. Although no accounts mention further active use in warfare or administration, the site’s legacy has been recognized through heritage protection laws in modern Spain to preserve its ruins and historical value.

Remains

Perched on a rocky ridge, the Castle of Cabañas displays an elongated and narrow layout that conforms to the natural contours of the hilltop. The fortress walls utilize masonry and roughly squared stones, known as sillarejo, which were sourced directly from the surrounding area. This local material was likely gathered by clearing parts of the rocky summit, creating a relatively level surface suitable for construction. The site’s steep, almost vertical cliffs on several sides provide natural defensive barriers, integrating the castle seamlessly with the rugged terrain.

Among the surviving structures, several stretches of the original walls stand alongside towers positioned near the ends of the castle’s extended plan. These towers are square in shape and punctuated by small openings on multiple floors, which would have served both defensive and observational functions. The best-preserved towers at either end of the fortress exemplify the castle’s medieval military architecture. The site is currently accessed via a pathway that begins close to the village cemetery in Cabañas del Castillo, connecting the historical ruins with the present-day community.

Though in a state of ruin, the remnants of the Castle of Cabañas retain visible evidence of its medieval fortification role, supported by the robust stonework and defensive siting documented in archaeological studies. Its preservation offers insight into the layered history of military architecture from the Muslim period through the Christian reconquest in this part of Spain.
