Roman Sites in Czechia: Explore the Military Base at Mušov
Roman sites in Czechia are represented here by the military base at Hradisko near Mušov, beside Pasohlávky in South Moravia. Roman troops established this base north of the Danube during the Marcomannic Wars of the second century AD. Excavations have identified defended approaches, accommodation, workshops and baths associated with an army operating beyond its established frontier.
The base is presented through excavated remains, finds and site plans, with a visitor centre at the foot of the hill. Its buildings do not survive as a standing stone fortress.

Mušov’s fortified hill and river approaches
The Roman fort at Pasohlávky occupied Hradisko, a low hill above the meeting of the Dyje, Jihlava and Svratka rivers. Its position overlooked crossings and routes through the surrounding plain. Earthworks and timber defences enclosed the military installation, with temporary camps in the wider area supporting movements of troops.
The principal occupation belongs to the campaigns of Marcus Aurelius. Stamped bricks and roof tiles identify detachments of the Tenth Legion, based at Vindobona, among the forces working here. The base was abandoned after Roman policy changed under Commodus around AD 180.
Mušov’s excavated baths and military accommodation
A masonry residence and adjoining bath complex were uncovered on the hill. The bath included heated rooms, water installations and coloured wall plaster. Its underfloor heating required a raised floor through which hot air could circulate. The adjoining residence has been interpreted as accommodation for senior military personnel.
Workshops on the eastern slope contained kilns and waste from production or repair. Further investigations identified gates, residential buildings and a military hospital on the lower slopes. Together, these discoveries record the buildings needed to maintain equipment, accommodate personnel and care for the wounded during a campaign.
Finds and plans at the Mušov visitor centre
The visitor centre at the foot of Hradisko presents archaeological finds and visual explanations of the fortress. Site trails relate the excavated buildings to their positions on the hill, including the baths, workshops and defended approaches. These displays help connect objects recovered during excavation with the buildings and military activities behind them.
