Ancient Greek Sites Map

The above map of ancient greek sites features all Greek sites across Africa, Europe and the Middle East. The map contains Greek sites related to the city states in Greece but also ancient sites related to the Macedonian, Ptolemaic and Seleucid empires. For ease of use, the map was categorized in:

  1. Greek army / defensive (such as walls or acropolises)
  2. Greek temples
  3. Greek theatres
  4. Greek cities / areas
  5. Other greek ruins / remains

The map of ancient Greek sites is still being continuously expanded to include new ancient sites. Many of the ancient cities mentioned have been developed further by the Romans, Byzantines or Ottomans, although often they were abondoned during the 7th century. The ancient Greek temples mentioned are more likely to have retained their original features, since these were located in remote areas or have been excavated and restored with their original materials.

The most remote city is Alexandria Oxiana. Alexandria Oxiana, also known as Alexandria on the Oxus, was an ancient city located near the Oxus River in present-day Afghanistan. Founded by Alexander the Great in the 4th century BCE, it was part of his vast empire. The city was an important center of trade and culture during its time. Its ruins are now archaeological sites that provide insight into the history of the region. Alexandria Oxiana played a role in the spread of Hellenistic culture into Central Asia.

Another interesting site is Bazira. The Bazira Ruins are the remnants of an ancient city located in present-day Pakistan. Dating back to the 3rd century BCE, Bazira was a key settlement during the Hellenistic period. The site includes various structures such as walls, streets, and foundations.
