Lierna Castle is located in the municipality of Lierna, Italy. It was originally constructed during the Romanesque period, built atop the remains of earlier Roman structures. The site occupies a peninsula extending into Lake Como, providing a naturally defensible position that shaped its strategic importance through the centuries.

The earliest significant historical association of Lierna Castle connects it to Queen Theodolinda, who ruled as Queen of the Lombards and Italy from 589 to 616 and is said to have resided at the castle during her reign. This early medieval period laid the foundation for the castle’s continued use and development in the following centuries.

During the 10th and 11th centuries, the castle was rebuilt or significantly expanded, with structures from this time forming the main surviving elements seen today. Around 1124, Lierna Castle became involved in ongoing conflicts between the rival cities of Milan and Como, serving as a contested military stronghold. Its strategic location made it valuable for controlling naval and land access on Lake Como.

In the mid-16th century, the castle became a key military base for Gian Giacomo Medici, known as “Medeghino,” a mercenary leader who used the fortress to support his military campaigns. His occupation marked a period of intense martial activity, culminating in 1532 when the castle was seized after heavy fighting by forces from the Grisons. After this period of conflict, Lierna Castle gradually lost its military significance and shifted its role toward becoming a residential and commercial settlement.

A notable event took place within the castle’s church on January 22, 1573, when Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy established the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus. This dynastic and chivalric order was founded following approval from Pope Gregory XIII, symbolizing the castle’s ongoing religious and cultural relevance. The castle itself still preserves a bronze bell that bears the emblem of this royal order.

Today, Lierna Castle remains inhabited by residents of the local frazione Castello, reflecting its continuous occupation from the early medieval period to the present day. It stands as the northwesternmost of Lierna’s eleven subdivisions.
