The Castell de Pratdip is located in the village of Pratdip, within the territory of what is today Spain. Its origins are linked to the medieval period, when the village was fortified and integrated into the broader political and territorial framework of the region. The exact date of the castle’s foundation remains unclear, but it arises within a context of medieval Christian reorganization.

Pratdip itself is first documented in the mid-12th century, notably through a papal bull issued by Pope Anastasius IV in 1154, which mentions the village’s parish church. This suggests that by the mid-1100s, the area was recovering as a Christian settlement, likely after the period of Islamic rule in the Iberian Peninsula. During this era, the village and its surroundings were part of a feudal system centered on the barony of Entença, initially under the control of the Castellvell family.

Starting in 1244, the Entença family took possession of the barony, which included the village and castle. This arrangement continued until 1324, when King James II of Aragon annexed the barony and incorporated it into the newly established County of Prades. This move placed the castle and village firmly within the Crown’s territorial administration.

By the 15th century, control of the County of Prades, and thus the barony of Entença, passed to the ducal house of Cardona. The Cardonas maintained stewardship for over two centuries before succession transferred ownership in 1663 to the Dukes of Medinaceli. These dukes were the last noble lords of the castle and village, marking the end of its feudal governance. Throughout these centuries, the castle functioned as part of the fortified structure defending the village, although direct historical documents pertaining exclusively to the castle are scarce.

Remains

The Castell de Pratdip is situated prominently on a rocky formation at the southern boundary of the village. Its position overlooks the ravine known as Clot Penyaler, close to Pratdip’s small bay, emphasizing its strategic location. Access to the site is gained via a ramp ascending from the village summit, leading to a large entrance featuring a Gothic vaulted portal. This portal would have served as the main gateway into the castle’s enclosure.

Today, only a few sturdy walls remain standing on the hilltop, outlining the general area that the castle occupied. These surviving walls, while substantial, date from a later period than the original medieval fortification. The structure itself lacks a roof and appears as a silhouette crowning the columned rock base beneath it. These remnants give a sense of the castle’s scale and placement but provide limited architectural detail.

Within the broader village, the layout was primarily centered around the parish church, with gates enclosing the settlement. The castle’s role, while important, was secondary in this village arrangement, forming part of the defensive complex rather than dominating daily life or administration. The scant physical remains invite reflection on the castle’s function as a stronghold integrated into the medieval fabric of Pratdip.
