History

The Château de Villa is located in the municipality of Sierre, Switzerland, and was originally constructed by the de Platea family during the 16th century. This patrician bourgeois family established the château as a residence in the early modern period, marking its significance within the local social landscape of that era.

In the 17th century, ownership of the château passed through inheritance to the de Preux family, who made it their principal home. During their tenure, they expanded the building by adding the west wing along with a prominent entrance portal, enhancing the château’s stature and functional space. This period reflects a continuation of residential use and architectural development under their stewardship.

Moving into the 20th century, the château experienced a notable change in ownership when Mme Panchaud de Bottens from the canton of Vaud acquired it in 1939. She undertook restoration efforts with the goal of creating a Swiss costume museum within the château. However, her plans were cut short by financial difficulties, leading to her bankruptcy in 1943.

Following this, local residents from Sierre took stewardship of the château in the late 1940s, showing community interest in the site’s preservation and use. This communal effort culminated in the founding of the Fondation du Château de Villa in 1951. The foundation’s mission was to establish the château as a cultural center for the canton, focusing on arts, culture, and the promotion of local viticulture—the cultivation and appreciation of wine, which is important to the region. The foundation integrated various facilities such as a restaurant, an œnothèque (a specialized wine library), and a sensorama, which serves as a space for wine tasting and educational seminars emphasizing sensory experiences related to wine and food.

The eastern wing and an octagonal tower date back to the original 16th-century structure built by the de Platea family. In the 17th century, the de Preux family expanded the château with the addition of a western wing and a main entrance portal, which now serves as the primary point of access. These later constructions complement the original building, creating a balanced architectural ensemble that combines elements from two successive periods.

Today, the château remains in good condition, sufficiently preserved to support its adaptation for modern uses such as housing a restaurant and a wine library. It also contains a sensorama, designed as a dedicated space for wine tasting and sensory workshops. The preservation and reuse of the structure demonstrate a successful integration of heritage with contemporary cultural functions, allowing the château to serve as a living link to the region’s past and its ongoing traditions in viticulture.
