The Castle of Balboa was constructed in the 13th century by medieval builders near the town of Balboa in what is now Spain. This fortress, situated in the municipality of Balboa, served as a significant stronghold during a time when local noble families established territorial control throughout the region.

The earliest written record mentioning the castle dates from 1260, indicating its role as a center of power for the Valcarce-Balboa family. Over time, the castle acted as a pivotal point in the management of lands and exertion of authority within the surrounding area. However, the 15th century brought turmoil to the fortress and the region during the Irmandiña Revolt, an uprising in which local peasants and nobles clashed fiercely. The castle suffered destruction alongside several other nearby fortresses, such as those in Sarracín and Corullón.

Following this period of upheaval, Pedro Álvarez Osorio, who held the title Count of Lemos, took on the task of rebuilding the castle. He likely reused parts of the original structure to restore its function and status within the domain. After his passing, ownership of the castle passed to the Marquesado de Villafranca, marking a shift in control that lasted until the 19th century. During that century, the abolition of feudal rights by the Cortes of Cádiz led to the castle changing hands among private owners.

In more recent history, the castle became the property of the Balboa Town Council in 2006, initiating efforts to protect the site. Beginning in 2021, restoration work focused on reinforcing the remaining keep tower to prevent its collapse and help preserve this medieval relic for the future.

Perched on a hill above the town, the Castle of Balboa’s ruins still evoke its former defensive purpose thanks to its elevated position. The surviving elements primarily belong to the Torre del Homenaje, the central keep tower that historically served as the last refuge within the fortress. This tower, reflecting medieval construction techniques, was made from locally sourced stone, assembled to create thick walls designed for protection.

The tower’s condition had deteriorated significantly over time, necessitating recent stabilization measures to maintain its stability. Although no detailed records specify its original layout or decorative elements, the existing structures clearly reveal layers of repair and rebuilding. These alterations likely date back to the 15th-century reconstruction carried out by the Count of Lemos, who restored the fortress after its prior destruction.

The castle stands today as a fragmentary but well-defined ruin, with the keep tower as its main preserved feature. The careful restoration works begun in the 21st century have helped secure the integrity of these remains, ensuring they continue to mark the historic landscape near Balboa.
