History
From surveillance post to fortification
Castell d’Esponellà is a castle in Esponellà, Spain, established as a frontier castle in 1381 and classified as military architecture. Its origins probably lay in a watchtower or fortified surveillance post used to observe and control the surrounding area. Members of the Creixell de Borrassá family served as its castellans as early as the eleventh century, and the family later became influential among Girona’s rural lesser nobility.
During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the Palera family succeeded the Creixell family. King James I of Aragon, the thirteenth-century ruler who expanded and consolidated the Crown of Aragon’s territories, authorized Guillem de Palera to rebuild the fortification during the thirteenth century. The site then passed to the Vilademuls family under the lordship of Dalmau de Rocabertí, who transferred the castle rights to the Sort family.
The Barony of Esponellà
At the end of the fourteenth century, King Peter IV of Aragon, known as Peter the Ceremonious, sold Esponellà to his physician Guillem de Colteller and authorized him to construct a castle. Peter IV was a fourteenth-century king of the Crown of Aragon. The new castle occupied approximately the territory of the present municipality and was established as a frontier stronghold in 1381.
The transaction created the Barony of Esponellà, a territorial lordship whose holder exercised authority over the land and its inhabitants. The grant included civil and criminal jurisdiction, described as the mero y mixto imperio, meaning extensive judicial powers over both kinds of cases. The barony and castle later passed to the Corbera family in the fifteenth century, followed by the Muntanyá family and finally the Berard family.
Castell d’Esponellà was designated a monument in the military architecture category on 8 November 1988.
Remains
The surviving castle occupies a site at Esponellà in the Pla de l’Estany. Its later fortification is thought to have been built over an earlier watchtower or fortified surveillance post, linking the castle’s physical form to its original role in observation and control. The transition from the earlier tower to the later castle remains unclear.
Within the castle’s area stood a chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Hope. The chapel formed part of the castle domain and represents the religious element associated with the fortified complex.
