The Château de Chessy stands in the village of Chessy, France, and was originally established by medieval builders associated with the Abbey of Savigny. Its origins reach back to land granted to the abbey in 968 by a donor named Arod and his wife Angèle.

The first castle was founded in the 12th century, marking the initial phase of fortification on this elevated site. Around 1270, under the leadership of Abbot Amédée de Roussillon, the château underwent significant reconstruction efforts, reinforcing its status as a religious and defensive structure. Later, toward the close of the 15th century, the castle was expanded further, reflecting continued use and adaptation through the Middle Ages.

During the French Wars of Religion in the late 16th century, the château suffered extensive damage that led to its decline and ruination. For centuries thereafter, the site remained neglected and fell into disrepair. It was not until the 19th century that restoration efforts were undertaken, which introduced a neo-Gothic architectural style that revitalized the castle’s appearance. In the 20th century, beginning in 1971, further rehabilitation was initiated by the decorator Vital-Durand, who also transformed the gardens surrounding the château. This conservation work contributed to the site’s recognition as a historic monument in 2004.

The Château de Chessy is set atop the highest point in the village and originally featured a fortified enclosure known as an enceinte, designed for defense. This enclosure was characterized by sloping walls, which helped deflect projectiles, and large arrow slits that allowed archers to target attackers while remaining protected. Within this defensive circuit stood a cylindrical keep constructed from finely dressed stone, exemplifying medieval craftsmanship and serving as a key stronghold.

Though parts of the original quadrangular enclosure have survived only in fragments, traces of its imposing walls and the fortified entrance remain visible. The gate provided controlled access and added an additional layer of security to the castle complex.

In addition to the medieval defenses, two residential wings dating from the 15th or 16th century lie outside the boundaries of the original fortification. These wings reflect a shift in the castle’s function toward dwelling spaces. The area inside the former enclosure, once cleared before the French Revolution to become a garden, underwent further transformation during the 19th century when it was converted into a rock garden. During the 20th-century restoration led by Vital-Durand, the gardens were redesigned, blending historical elements with renewed landscaping.
