History

Krąg Castle is a historic residence in Krąg, Poland, whose documented history begins with a fortified tower built in 1495 by Adam Podewils. The tower stood within a moat and formed the earliest known stage in the development of the castle.

From fortified tower to Renaissance residence

In the 1580s, the original tower was completely dismantled. Feliks von Podewils initiated its replacement with a Renaissance residential complex. The Renaissance was a European period that revived architectural forms and ideas associated with classical antiquity. The new residence occupied the same site beside Castle Lake.

Rebuilding, fire, and restoration

The residence was rebuilt during the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. The later intervention took place in the Neo-Renaissance style, a nineteenth-century revival of Renaissance design, at the initiative of Karl Wilhelm von Riepenhausen. The castle burned in 1945. Its surviving parts continued to serve practical purposes until 1956, housing a forest district office and a school. A forest district is a local administrative unit responsible for managing forests.

Between 1958 and 1960, the remaining structure was partially secured. After the building was abandoned, deterioration continued. Reconstruction for use by the forest district began in the 1970s but stopped because of financial difficulties. The castle was sold to a private owner in 1990 and subsequently underwent complete renovation to its pre-1945 condition, incorporating the successive historical alterations. It is entered in Poland’s heritage register as number 105, with registration dated 26 June 1956. The renovated complex now houses the Podewils Hotel.

Remains

Lake-side castle complex

Krąg Castle stands directly beside Castle Lake in the village of Krąg, within the Polanów municipality of Koszalin County, West Pomeranian Voivodeship. Its physical development is expressed in the sequence from a moated residential tower to a Renaissance residence, followed by seventeenth- and nineteenth-century rebuilding. The later phase includes Neo-Renaissance work, while the post-1990 renovation reconstructed the complex to its pre-1945 condition and retained the successive alterations.

The present complex includes the restored castle buildings together with a beach and bathing piers beside the lake. These facilities form part of the current hotel complex, whose buildings preserve the layered architectural history created by the original tower, the Renaissance replacement, and later rebuilding.
