Schloss Hantberg is situated in the municipality of Johnsdorf-Brunn, Austria. Its foundation dates back to the late 19th century, set within the cultural landscape of Austria.

The castle’s initial construction began in 1897 under the direction of Belgian Count Clemente de Renesse. His motivation arose from a personal connection to Josefa Herring, who owned the local castle estate. The two were united in marriage in 1909, following the death of Josefa’s first husband. This period marks the establishment of the property as both a residence and a symbol of their union.

Following the First World War, Count Clemente and Josefa faced financial difficulties that impacted the estate’s upkeep. Count Clemente passed away in 1929, with Josefa continuing to reside at the castle until her death in 1952. Subsequently, the property changed hands and was acquired by Paula Freiin von Hammer-Purgstall. She initiated careful renovation efforts to maintain and restore the castle’s condition.

From 1980 onward, the castle came under the ownership of Elfriede Grete and Josef Franz Pscheidl. Over the course of more than a decade, they undertook extensive expansions and improvements, ensuring the alterations blended seamlessly with the original structure by using the same types of stone. This approach preserved the architectural coherence of the site.

At the end of 2022, ownership transferred to a financial company, marking the latest chapter in the castle’s history.

Schloss Hantberg presents as a Historicist-style late 19th-century construction, prominently featuring a masonry façade designed to resemble a fortified building. The main complex is composed of two wings linked by a bridge, creating a unified structural ensemble. This design choice reflects the period’s appreciation for historic architectural motifs reinterpreted through modern methods.

Within the property, a chapel is incorporated, serving as a dedicated space for worship and reflection. The chapel’s interior displays craftsmanship consistent with the overall attention to detail observed throughout the estate.

Surrounding the castle is a landscaped park, enhancing the setting and providing a natural environment that complements the built structures. Throughout the various renovation and expansion phases, notably those completed between 1980 and the early 1990s, materials matching the original stone were employed. This careful selection ensured new additions integrated harmoniously with existing masonry, preserving the castle’s aesthetic unity.
