History

Vorburg is the forecourt entrance of Greifenstein Castle in Germany. A former drawbridge leads to the pointed-arch gate, the castle’s sole entrance. Stone lions flank the approach: the left displays the Stauffenberg coat of arms, and the right the Trockau coat of arms. Above the gate are the Stauffenberg arms and a projecting defensive structure with an opening for firing.

In 1933, Berthold F. L. M. F. Schenk von Stauffenberg, then lord of Greifenstein Castle, had the large gate to the castle courtyard painted in Bavaria’s white and blue colors as a deliberate statement.
