History
Kuşçu Doğan Mosque is an early 15th-century Ottoman mosque in Edirne, Türkiye. It was built by Kuşçu Doğan, a Janissary Agha, a senior commander of the Janissary corps, the elite infantry force of the Ottoman army. Kuşçu Doğan held this office during the reigns of Murad II and Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, also known as Mehmed II, who conquered Constantinople in 1453.
The mosque belongs to Sunni Islam and remains active. Its square plan is covered by a single dome, while one minaret completes the main architectural arrangement. The building stands within a small garden, and a cemetery associated with it contains numerous gravestones.
The dome measures 8.46 metres in diameter and rests on an octagonal drum. The eastern, western, and southern walls each contain four windows, providing the principal documented pattern of openings in the mosque’s walls.
