History
Fuerte de Camellos is an outer military fort in Melilla, Spain, built on Camellos Hill as part of the fortifications outside the city’s central defensive area. Construction began on 10 August 1883 and was completed in 1884. The circular complex is arranged around an internal courtyard with a staircase, while rooms and a ditch form a ring around it. Its layout includes a basement, a ground floor, and a gun battery, a fortified position designed for operating artillery.
In 1903, the fort was enlarged with two gun platforms and a telegraph sentry box, a sheltered guard post associated with communications. Fuerte de Camellos was restored in 2020, when accessibility improvements were also made. It is legally protected as a Spanish Asset of Cultural Interest in the Monument category, a formal heritage designation for sites and monuments regarded as having cultural value.
