History

Château de Mavaleix is a historic château in the commune of Chalais, France. Built in the thirteenth century and reconstructed in the sixteenth century, it became the residence of the Grenouillet family, ironmasters who owned or managed ironworks, including the Mavaleix forges near the Valouse.

Medieval Origins and Renaissance Reconstruction

The château incorporates the remains of an earlier thirteenth-century castle. A major reconstruction took place in the sixteenth century, creating the building associated with the later history of Mavaleix while retaining elements of its medieval predecessor.

The Grenouillet Family and the Ironworks

The Grenouillet family came originally from Franche-Comté and was connected with the Mavaleix forges, situated several hundred metres northeast of the château. In the eighteenth century, the family introduced the Franche-Comté refining method and directed many ironworks in Berry. In Périgord, the Grenouillets formed alliances with other prominent ironworking families, including the Pasquet de Salagnac, de Lignac, and Bugeaud de La Piconnerie families.

The final Grenouillet line at Mavaleix sold the château in 1980. The building is also associated with General Bazaine, a French army officer who reportedly stopped there after escaping from Sainte-Marguerite Island and before going into exile in Spain.

Château de Mavaleix has been protected as a French historic monument, a legal designation for buildings or sites valued for their architectural or historical importance, since 16 December 1947. It remains privately owned and has been adapted for use as a hotel-restaurant, a hikers’ lodge, and guest rooms.

Remains

The surviving château combines the sixteenth-century reconstruction with remains of the earlier thirteenth-century castle. Its physical and historical setting is linked to the Mavaleix forges, which lie several hundred metres to the northeast near the Valouse. The building stands in the commune of Chalais, in the Dordogne, and its present use reflects the continued adaptation of the historic structure.
