History
Şah Melek Mosque is an Ottoman mosque in Edirne, Turkey, built in 1429 in the Ottoman architectural tradition by Şah Melek Pasha. Its original design was a rectangular-plan masonry structure with a single dome and one minaret.
Şah Melek Pasha served as the Rumeli Beylerbey, the senior Ottoman governor responsible for the empire’s European territories, during the reigns of Sultan Mehmed I and Sultan Murad II. The mosque is affiliated with Sunni Islam and continues to function as an active place of worship.
During the Balkan Wars, a cannonball struck the mosque and destroyed its minaret. The surviving mosque remains associated with its early fifteenth-century Ottoman foundation and religious function.
