History

Fort No. 1a is a nineteenth-century military fortification in Russia, located near Kaliningrad in Maloye Isakovo, within Guryevsk Urban District. Known as Groeben, it formed part of the fort belt surrounding the fortress city of Königsberg. The belt, called the “Night Featherbed of Königsberg,” combined major and smaller forts to protect the city.

Fort No. 1a was built as one of the smaller works in this defensive system and served as an intermediate fortification, a defensive position placed between larger forts to strengthen the intervals between them. It was named after the Prussian general Karl von Groeben.

The fort is currently controlled by the Russian Ministry of Defence, and its grounds are closed. A resolution of the Government of Kaliningrad Oblast dated 23 March 2007 designated the inter-fortification structure No. 1a Groeben as a cultural heritage object of regional significance. It bears registration number 391510365690005 and object number 3900658000.
