History
Baruthane Mosque, also known as the İsmail Ağa Mosque, is an active Sunni mosque in central Edirne, Turkey. Sunni Islam is one of the major branches of Islam. İsmail Ağa, an Ottoman benefactor whose title was an honorific for a man of status, built the mosque in the mid-15th century. He lived during the reigns of Mehmed II and Bayezid II, the Ottoman sultan who succeeded Mehmed II.
The square-plan mosque has a dome and stands in a small garden on ground sloping from south to north. Its minaret, at the northern corner, has one balcony. Eight wooden posts support the entrance prayer porch, which contains a martyr’s tomb.
Repairs took place in 1631, 1911, 1993, and 2005. A comprehensive restoration from 2018 to 2020 added a separate prayer area for women and renovated the garden and ablution areas.
