History

Ottoman Origins and Development

Şekerci Han is an Ottoman-period han in Istanbul, Türkiye, in the Fatih district. Built in the Ottoman architectural tradition, it is thought to date originally to the fifteenth century, during the reign of Mehmed II, whose rule began in 1451 and included the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453. The han may have been constructed alongside the Fatih Külliyesi, an Ottoman religious and charitable complex organized around a mosque and supported by institutions and commercial buildings.

The exact construction date remains uncertain. The building combines architectural characteristics associated with both the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries. Its first form is generally understood to have had two storeys, while a third storey and various extensions were added in the seventeenth century.

Later Associations and Current Condition

The han later accommodated several notable figures, including Said Nursî, Mehmet Âkif Ersoy, and Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar. A measured survey was approved on 4 June 2014, but maintenance and repair work could not proceed because ownership of the building was divided among different individuals. Şekerci Han is currently unused.

Remains

Şekerci Han stands at the corner of Islambol Avenue and Malta Bazaar Street in Fatih, Istanbul. It is a three-storey han, a building traditionally providing accommodation, storage, and commercial space for travelers and merchants. The surviving structure contains 100 rooms and reflects the building’s development across two major phases. The original fifteenth-century arrangement is thought to have comprised two storeys, while the upper level and other additions belong to the seventeenth-century expansion. Together, these elements form the present Ottoman-period caravanserai, a way station associated with travel and trade routes.
