History
Saroyi Tash Madrasah, also known as Tosh Saroy, is an eighteenth-century Islamic educational institution in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. A madrasah traditionally provided religious and scholarly instruction. The building was erected in Bukhara’s historic center during the rule of representatives of the Uzbek Ashtarkhanid or Mangyt houses, ruling dynasties associated with the government of Bukhara. Its Central Asian architectural style reflects the traditions that developed across the historic regions of Central Asia.
The madrasah stands on Samarkand Street in the Kukaldosh mahalla, a local urban neighborhood or community district. Its principal construction material is fired brick, but the surviving building is in very poor condition.
Saroyi Tash Madrasah is included in Uzbekistan’s National List of Immovable Cultural Heritage Objects and has protected status. In 2010, a state program provided for investigation of the building, dismantling of structurally dangerous sections, structural strengthening, and restoration. The planned works remained unimplemented for a prolonged period.
