History

Sancakburnu Castle is an Ottoman coastal fortress in Türkiye, located at İnciraltı in İzmir’s Balçova district. Built in 1666 during the Ottoman period by order of Grand Vizier Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, it stood at Sancakburnu on the southern side of the Gulf of İzmir. The fortress controlled shipping through the gulf’s narrowest passage and helped regulate vessels entering and leaving İzmir Harbor.

Foundation and harbor control

The fortress was built where deposits carried by the Gediz River had made the river mouth shallow. Its position allowed Ottoman authorities to monitor maritime traffic and helped prevent ships calling at İzmir from departing without paying customs duties. Soldiers were transferred from Manisa Castle to serve at the new stronghold, while the construction reduced the importance of İzmir Harbor Castle.

Earthquake, repair, and artillery

An earthquake struck İzmir in 1688 and left Sancakburnu Castle in ruins. Repairs restored the fortress to service in 1691. Further work took place in 1828, when additional defensive batteries, fortified positions designed to mount artillery, were added to strengthen its military function.

In May 1877, Krupp guns brought from Germany were installed at the castle. During the First World War, the global conflict fought from 1914 to 1918, British and French warships attacked Sancakburnu Castle from 5 to 10 March 1915. The defenses held, and the warships withdrew.

Military use in the modern period

Sancakburnu Castle remains within a military zone operated by the Yenikale Special Training Center Command. Its continuing military setting reflects the defensive purpose that shaped the fortress from its construction in the seventeenth century through its later repairs and artillery upgrades.

Fortress fabric and artillery defenses

Coastal fortress

Sancakburnu Castle survives as a coastal fortress at Sancakburnu in present-day İnciraltı. Stone from İzmir’s ancient theater was used in its construction, linking the Ottoman defensive work to earlier building material in the city. The fortress occupies the coastal position that enabled it to control movement through the narrow part of the gulf.

Defensive batteries and guns

The defensive batteries added during the 1828 repairs formed fortified positions for artillery. Krupp artillery pieces were installed at the castle in May 1877, adding modern nineteenth-century weapons to the site’s defenses. These artillery features, together with the earlier fortress fabric, reflect the castle’s adaptation to changing military requirements.
