History
Itakhola Mura is a Buddhist archaeological monument in Kotbari, Bangladesh, in the Mainamati region of Comilla District, about 8 kilometres west of Comilla Sadar. It lies across Kotbari Road from Rupban Mura. The site was used from ancient times as a quarry for making bricks, a use that gave it its name.
Cultural periods
Itakhola Mura passed through five cultural periods. Remains from the earliest three lie beneath later ruins, making them difficult to recover and interpret.
Excavation
Several excavations have revealed a large Buddhist stupa complex and an associated monastery. The excavation status of the site is inactive.
Remains
The archaeological remains occupy three levels along the side of a hill. The site includes an extensive stupa complex and a Buddhist monastery positioned adjacent to it.
Stupa complex and monastery
Principal stupa
The principal stupa is solidly constructed on a foundation measuring 13.1 square metres. A small pedestal or platform stands at the centre of its eastern, or front, side. The platform measures 2.4 by 2.1 metres.
Buddhist monastery
The Buddhist monastery lies 42 metres north of and beside the stupa complex. It measures 34.14 by 25 metres.
