History
The Intercession of the Theotokos Church in Novo Selo, Štip, North Macedonia, is a medieval Orthodox monastic church. Its dedication refers to the Protection of the Theotokos, a Marian title in Eastern Christianity meaning the protection of Mary, the Mother of God.
For a period during its history, the church served as a women’s monastery. This association gave it the traditional name “the Grandmothers.” Today, the church belongs to the Macedonian Orthodox Church–Ohrid Archbishopric, within the Bregalnica Diocese and the Štip Archierarchical Vicariate. A diocese is a regional church jurisdiction, while an archierarchical vicariate is a smaller district under episcopal authority. The church remains active.
