History
Harff’sche Burg is the ruin of a sixteenth-century lowland castle in Nörvenich, Germany, built by the local nobleman Johann von Harff zu Geilenkirchen in 1565. A lowland castle was a fortified residence constructed on relatively level terrain rather than on a hill or mountain. The building stood on land whose earlier history reached back to around 1400, when Werner von Vlatten-Merode received a farm in Nörvenich through an inheritance division.
Foundation and Ownership
The castle was established at the site approximately one and a half centuries after Werner von Vlatten-Merode received the farm. Johann von Harff zu Geilenkirchen belonged to the local Harff family, and his construction gave the property its principal surviving historical form.
About a century later, ownership passed to Philipp Wilhelm Freiherr von Harff-Dreyborn. Freiherr was an aristocratic title broadly corresponding to baron. In the nineteenth century, Maximilian Graf Wolff Metternich acquired the lowland castle and its associated farm buildings. Afterward, marriage transferred ownership to the Vicomtes de Maistre zu Gymnich, a noble family whose title broadly corresponded to viscount.
Abandonment and Preservation
Harff’sche Burg has been uninhabited since 1880, and the ruin subsequently deteriorated. Large sections of the roof collapsed in 1904, followed by the stepped gables in 1909. By 1933, all roof and gable elements had disappeared. The property entered private ownership in the early 1930s.
The bay window was renovated in 1935. Efforts to secure the masonry and stair tower in 1938 remained unfinished because of construction of the West Wall, a German defensive system built before and during the Second World War. The ruin was added to the monument list of the municipality of Nörvenich as number 42 on 19 March 1985. Initial securing measures received 12,000 euros from the North Rhine-Westphalia State Monument Authority in December 2017, while the German federal government approved 850,000 euros for renovation and preservation in 2018.
Remains
Castle Building and Towers
Harff’sche Burg stands on the private grounds of Trompeterhof, between the Neffelbach and the cemetery. The surviving structure is a two-storey rectangular brick building measuring approximately 22 by 11 metres. It originally carried a gabled roof, but the roof and stepped-gable elements have since disappeared, leaving the building as a ruin.
Round Tower
A massive round tower occupied the eastern corner of the castle. It formed part of the building’s original arrangement and remains associated with the surviving rectangular brick structure.
Stair Tower and Bay Window
A slender stair tower stood on the south side opposite the round tower. The castle also had a bay window, which was renovated in 1935. The stair tower and the remaining masonry were included in the unfinished securing efforts of 1938.
