History
Fort Monostor, also known as Fort Sandberg, is a nineteenth-century fortification in Komárom, Hungary. Built between 1850 and 1871, it formed part of the fortification system of Komárom, a coordinated group of defensive structures designed to protect a settlement or strategic area.
After the Second World War, Soviet forces established the largest ammunition-storage facility in the Fortress of Monostor at the site. Thousands of ammunition wagons were dispatched from its strictly guarded facilities, giving the fort a major military role during the postwar period.
Fort Monostor is now open to the public as a museum and forms part of a series of forts in the area. The site also hosts Europe Gate, a sculpture made of light-transmitting concrete.
