History
Château d’Hauterives is a château near Hauterives, France, built around the time an earlier fortified castle collapsed around 1650. The exact construction date of the present building remains uncertain, but it belongs to the period when the older stronghold ceased to dominate the village.
The building preserves interior details from later phases of its history, including seventeenth-century wood panelling and eighteenth-century stucco mouldings. Its grounds contain a cedar of Lebanon about 35 metres high, estimated to be three hundred years old.
The château became municipal property and now accommodates temporary exhibitions. It has been listed as a historic monument in France since 1926, a heritage-protection status that provides legal protection below the level given to a fully classified monument. In spring 2024, the building was at risk of collapse, and beams were installed to support its exterior walls.
