History
Fort de Montcorin is a military fortification in France, constructed between 1877 and 1879 in the commune of Irigny. It formed part of Lyon’s second fortified belt, a regional defensive network within the wider Séré de Rivières system, the late nineteenth-century chain of French fortifications developed under General Raymond Adolphe Séré de Rivières.
The fort had a garrison of 120 soldiers and covered the western part of Lyon. Built at an elevation of 270 metres, it remains associated with the defensive organization of the city and its surrounding area. Since the 1960s, a cubic water tower has stood on the fort. The commune of Irigny currently owns the site.
