History
Niederburg is a hilltop castle in Kranichfeld, Germany, standing on a promontory above the right side of the Ilm at the town’s eastern edge. It is one of Kranichfeld’s two castles. The elevated site used the natural slope to strengthen its defenses and included an exceptionally large outer bailey, the enclosed area beyond the castle’s main fortified core.
Kranichfeld developed beside the Bohemian Road, an important long-distance trade route leading toward Eger and Prague. From Erfurt, the road passed through Klettbach and Tonndorf, crossed the former ford of the Ilm at Kranichfeld, ran past the town church, and continued through Rittersdorf and Haufeld to Teichel. There it met the Nuremberg or Copper Road, which ran from Mansfeld through Blankenhain, Hochdorf, and Rudolstadt toward Nuremberg.
Niederburg’s defenses included substantial ramparts, raised earthworks used for protection, and moats that obstructed access. Several towers formed part of the castle’s defensive arrangement, while the large outer bailey expanded the fortified area beyond the central castle.
