History
Camporreal Palace, also known as the Palace of Benavente, is a historic residence in the centre of Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. Its origins are described as medieval, although an inscription at the entrance dates the building’s origin to 1545.
Medieval tradition and sixteenth-century residence
Tradition connects the site with Alfonso X’s conquest of Jerez. Alfonso X, a thirteenth-century king of Castile and León known as the Wise, is said to have granted the property to a noble knight who had helped him.
In the sixteenth century, the Benavente and Cabeza de Vaca families were joined through marriage. Pedro Benavente Cabeza de Vaca y Carvajal commissioned the residence, and its heirs were the Marquises of Campo Real.
Cultural life and heritage protection
The palace hosted formal dances, charity events, and classical-music concerts. On 26 January 1993, Spain declared it an Asset of Cultural Interest in the monument category, a legal heritage-protection status.
Remains
The palace combines a two-storey façade with a rectangular courtyard on four sides, arranged in a balanced layout. Its façade brings together Renaissance design, which revived classical forms in early modern Europe, and Neoclassical design, a later return to classical forms.
Façade
Built in 1785 by José Vargas y Sánchez, the façade has a central doorway flanked by two Ionic columns, whose capitals have scroll-shaped tops. A balcony sits above the entrance within an arch.
Courtyard
The courtyard is decorated with plant and heraldic motifs. One medallion depicts the marriage of Pedro Benavente and Beatriz Bernalte.
Earlier building and wine cellar
Remains of an earlier Islamic building lie beneath the palace. The residence also contains Jerez’s oldest wine cellar.
