History
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is the monastery church of the monastery of the same name in Dobrić, within Šabac, Serbia. It belongs to the Serbian Orthodox Church’s Eparchy of Šabac, a diocese within the Eastern Orthodox Church.
Ottoman forces, representing an empire that then exercised political control over Serbia, burned an earlier wooden church at Dobrić in 1815. The present church was built in 1827 as its successor. Marko Štitarac, its patron, was buried beside the church.
The church is protected as an immovable cultural monument and classified in Serbia as a Monument of Culture of Great Importance.
Remains
The church combines more durable construction with a design tradition shaped by wooden churches. Its exterior and interior preserve features of that architectural transition.
Exterior
Plan and roof
Two semicircular choir projections extend beyond the main footprint. At the east end, a semicircular altar apse, or altar recess, is echoed by the rounded form of the west end. A single high roof with very steep slopes covers the building. Its form recalls an earlier wooden roof covering, later replaced by roof tiles.
Porch and façades
The west end is a partly enclosed masonry porch raised on a high base. Its columns are joined by semicircular arches. Decorative plasterwork shapes the façades: vertical strips resembling shallow columns divide the walls, and a horizontal band provides a contrasting line. A decorated lintel, the horizontal member above a doorway, marks the north-side entrance. This façade treatment distinguishes the church among comparable buildings of the transition period.
Interior
A curved wooden ceiling covers the interior. A wooden partition separates the entrance area from the main worship space, using upright posts and a series of arches. Elements made from thin boards decorate the partition.
