History
Seyidli Mosque is a former Shia Muslim mosque in Shusha, Azerbaijan, believed to have been built in the eighteenth century in the Arran architectural tradition, a regional style associated with the eastern Caucasus. It served the Seyidli neighborhood in the city’s lower quarters and was one of the 17 mosques that operated in Shusha. Shia Islam is the branch of Islam that regards Ali and his descendants as the rightful successors to Muhammad’s religious leadership.
In May 1992, the mosque came under the control of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. In 2020, it returned to Azerbaijani control. During approximately 30 years of de facto Armenian administration under the Republic of Artsakh, a de facto Armenian-administered entity in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, the building remained unchanged from the Soviet period and was well preserved, according to a satellite investigation by Cornell University’s Caucasus Heritage Watch.
Seyidli Mosque stands within the Shusha State Historical-Architectural Reserve, a protected heritage area encompassing historic sites in the city.
Remains
Seyidli Mosque is a small, two-storey neighborhood building at the intersection of Telman and Garyaghdyogly streets. Its present partial-ruinous condition makes it difficult to distinguish from the surrounding local residential properties. The building is attributed to the Arran architectural school, reflecting a regional architectural tradition associated with Arran in the eastern Caucasus.
The rectangular prayer hall has a simpler internal arrangement than the Mamayi and Saatli mosques, lacking their three-bay division. Its surviving form includes neither domes nor minarets, giving the building a modest neighborhood character within Shusha’s historic urban fabric.
