History

Medieval Orthodox foundation

The Church of St. Petka in the village of Donja Budriga, Kosovo, is a medieval Orthodox church dedicated to Saint Petka of Bulgaria, a saint associated with the Bulgarian religious tradition. It belongs to the Raška-Prizren Diocese, an administrative jurisdiction of the Serbian Orthodox Church, and remains an active place of worship.

The church stands within the local cemetery in the Partesh area. Its medieval character and continuing religious use connect the site with the Orthodox Christian heritage of the surrounding community.

Damage, restoration, and later protection

The church suffered severe damage during the 1999 NATO bombing and the 2001 earthquake. It was later restored through voluntary donations, chiefly from Serbs in Zurich, Switzerland, together with contributions from people abroad and from the surrounding area.

During unrest in 2013, the church was broken into and looted. Its interior inventory was disturbed, and money from donations was stolen. The site is protected in Kosovo as a cultural-heritage monument in the archaeological category, under the official designation “Archaeological Site / Reserve,” with reference number 3702.
