History
The Church of Our Lady of Remedy is a Roman Catholic church in Kotor, Montenegro, founded and completed in 1518 in the Romanesque style. Dedicated to Our Lady of Remedy, a devotional title for the Virgin Mary associated with healing and protection, it belongs to the Cathedral parish within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kotor. The church remains active.
Remains
The church is a small stone building on the slope of St. John Mountain, positioned on a cliff above Kotor’s Old Town and approximately halfway along the route to St. John Fortress. Its Romanesque design uses substantial stone construction and solid, simple forms, and the building has a single church tower. Access to the church follows a staircase of more than 650 steps.
Earlier Christian Basilica
Beneath the church lies an Early Christian basilica dating from the sixth century. This type of late-antique Christian church was generally arranged around a central nave with side aisles. The basilica stands near the main city gate of Old Town Kotor and is the oldest known building in Montenegro.
