Castles in North Macedonia: Explore a Medieval Tower and an Earlier Fortified Settlement

The North Macedonia collection currently contains two matching sites: a standing medieval tower in Kratovo and the excavated fortified settlement of Tauresium. They represent very different scales of survival. The tower provides the main example of substantial standing masonry, while Tauresium preserves the plan and lower remains of an earlier enclosure.

Zlatko’s Tower: a stone strongpoint in Kratovo

Zlatko’s Tower rises above a compact square footprint in the centre of Kratovo. Probably dating from the fourteenth century, it belongs to the town’s tradition of defensive towers. Its tall stone walls concentrated protection vertically within a relatively small building.

The entrance was altered over time, moving from the eastern side to the north. Such changes are part of the structure’s history rather than evidence of a wholly unchanged medieval interior. The tower’s surviving height and enclosed form give it a stronger architectural presence than the low remains of a larger ruined compound.

Tauresium: the plan of a fortified settlement

Tauresium, near Taor, occupies a hill arranged across two terraces. Excavation has exposed a roughly triangular late-antique defensive circuit, towers and buildings inside the enclosure. One building included a courtyard with a colonnade and adjoining rooms.

These remains are principally archaeological masonry rather than a standing castle with roofed halls. Their value lies in the settlement layout: the relationship between the hill, enclosing defences and buildings within them. The site therefore adds an earlier fortified community to the map without implying the same degree of preservation as the tower at Kratovo.
