History

The Sumelocenna-Museum is situated in Rottenburg am Neckar, Germany, on the site of the ancient Roman settlement known as Sumelocenna. This settlement began as a small town, or vicus, that grew around a Roman military fort established during the 1st century AD. The fort marked the area as a strategic location within the Roman Empire’s frontier system.

During the Roman period, Sumelocenna developed into a regional center, serving both military and civilian populations. The vicus supported the fort by providing goods, services, and housing for soldiers and their families.

Archaeological excavations at Sumelocenna have revealed foundations and fragments of Roman buildings, illustrating the layout of the vicus and the military fort.

The archaeological remains are limited. Certain building foundations are preserved in situ, allowing visitors to see parts of the original Roman settlement. Other finds, such as smaller objects and inscriptions, have been carefully conserved and are exhibited within the museum to provide a fuller picture of the site’s history.
