History

Emly Cathedral, also called the Cathedral Church of St Alibeus, was a former cathedral in Emly, Ireland, dedicated to Ailbe of Emly, a Christian saint traditionally associated with the foundation and early religious history of the settlement. As a cathedral, it served as the principal church of a diocese and was associated with the bishop’s official seat.

The cathedral was successively connected with the Diocese of Emly, the Archdiocese of Cashel, and the Diocese of Cashel and Waterford. It is identified with the Church of Ireland, the Anglican church in Ireland, and is currently listed under the Diocese of Tuam, Killala and Achonry in the Province of Dublin.

Fire destroyed the cathedral in 1192 and struck it again in 1827. By 1876, the former cathedral was completely disused.
