History
Saint Hripsime Church, Aygedzor, is a medieval Armenian church in central Aygedzor, Armenia. Its construction is placed in the 5th–6th centuries, while both its foundation and completion are dated to the 6th century. Hripsime is revered in Armenian Christian tradition as an early Christian martyr.
The church belongs to the Armenian Apostolic Church, an ancient Christian church centered in Armenia, and to the Diocese of Tavush, the church jurisdiction serving that region. It is a single-nave building that now survives in ruins, on an elevated plateau on the right bank of the Akhanja River, about 50 metres from the river. A cemetery occupies adjacent grounds, and khachkars, carved stone monuments bearing crosses, stand around the church. It is listed among Aygedzor’s immovable monuments of history and culture and designated a cultural monument in Armenia.
