History
Tajabad Caravanserai is a historic travelers’ inn in Iran’s Hamadan Province, associated with the Safavid period, the era of the Safavid dynasty that ruled Iran from the early sixteenth to the early eighteenth century. Although linked with that period, the caravanserai was built by Zobeydeh Khanom, daughter of Fath Ali Shah Qajar, a nineteenth-century ruler of Iran and the second shah of the Qajar dynasty.
The building entered Iran’s national heritage register on 11 May 1997 under registration number 1872. On 17 September 2023, during the 45th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Riyadh, it was inscribed with 53 other historic caravanserais as part of the Iranian Caravanserais World Heritage property. The property includes 54 caravanserais across 24 Iranian provinces and was inscribed under cultural criteria (ii) and (iii), becoming Iran’s twenty-seventh World Heritage property.
