History

Farasfaj Caravanserai is a Safavid-era caravanserai in Farasfaj village, Hamadan Province, Iran. Built in the architectural style of Iran’s Safavid dynasty, which ruled much of the country from the early sixteenth to the early eighteenth century, it served as a roadside accommodation and service complex for merchants, caravans, officials, and other travelers.

Also known as the Shah Abbasi Caravanserai, the site reflects the network of travel facilities established during the Safavid period. Iran registered it as a National Heritage work under registration number 1970, recognizing its place within the country’s historical architectural heritage.

In 2023, at the 45th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Riyadh, Farasfaj Caravanserai was inscribed within the serial World Heritage property known as “Iranian Caravanserais.” The property brings together 54 historic caravanserais in 24 Iranian provinces and is listed under cultural criteria (ii) and (iii), which address cultural interchange and exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or civilization. The inscription, registered as number 1668, became Iran’s 27th World Heritage property.
