History

St. Nicholas Church is a medieval Orthodox church in Gorno Sonje, North Macedonia. Its exact construction date is unknown. The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, a major Christian saint traditionally associated with charity and the protection of travelers, sailors, and children.

The church was later renovated, with work carried out by Yakov Zografski, a zograf, or painter of religious images such as icons and frescoes, from the Mijak tradition associated with the Debar area. St. Nicholas Church belongs to the Skopje Diocese and the South Skopje Episcopal Deanery of the Macedonian Orthodox Church-Ohrid Archbishopric. It remains active and has an associated bell tower. Profiled marble blocks stand in the churchyard.
