History
Trilek Castle, also known as Old Castle, is a small castle in Slovenia built near Col in the early sixteenth century by the Trilek family. It combined defensive purposes with political and economic representation, and later served in regional defence during conflicts involving the Ottoman Empire and local authorities.
Trilek Family and Carniolan Ownership
During the first half of the seventeenth century, Janez Friderik Trillekh owned the castle and enlarged his domains in Carniola, a historical region of the eastern Alps that included parts of present-day Slovenia. Documents from 1687 name the owner as Janez Friderik Triller, Count of Trillegkh. The different spellings are probably the result of transcription errors.
The castle entered the written record in 1689, when the Carniolan historian and chronicler Johann Weikhard von Valvasor described it in The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola, a survey of the region’s geography, history, and monuments.
Later Estate History
By the middle of the eighteenth century, Trilek Castle belonged to Count Franz Bernard Lamberg. He sold it in 1756 to Anton Ludvik, Count of Abramsberg, whose noble family lived in Šturje.
Bankruptcy led to the sale of the estate at auction in 1880, after which it was removed from the land register. A citizen named Božič bought the ruined castle that year, and the estate was joined to the Vipava feudal estate, then owned by Count Carlo Federico Antonio Lanthieri.
Archaeological Discoveries and Modern Condition
A structural-consolidation intervention in the nineteenth century brought a Roman milestone to light. Dedicated to Julian the Apostate, a fourth-century Roman emperor, it was later transferred to the National Museum of Slovenia in Ljubljana. Roman coins dating to the second century AD were also found at the castle.
Although the castle remains generally intact, its condition was poor in August 2024. Unstable ceilings and walls made entry unsafe.
Remains
Castle Structure
Trilek Castle is a compact fortified complex consisting of a small tower and two annexes. The surviving structure includes the tower and part of the enceinte, the main enclosing defensive wall or fortified boundary of a castle. The castle is generally intact, but unstable ceilings and walls affect its present condition.
Roman Finds
The site has yielded material from the Roman period. A milestone dedicated to Julian the Apostate was discovered during nineteenth-century structural work and is now preserved in the National Museum of Slovenia in Ljubljana. Coins from the second century AD were also found at the castle.
