History

Bärenthoren Castle is a manor estate in Bärenthoren, a locality of Zerbst in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The manor was first recorded in 1572 and later passed to the von Kalitsch family.

The manor and the von Kalitsch family

Gottlob von Kalitsch (1752–1798), associated with Polenzko and Bärenthoren, is identified as the family’s first representative connected with the estate. Friedrich von Kalitsch Sr. (1786–1870), a district administrator, or local administrative official, and a chamberlain, or court official, probably took over the estate on 12 January 1843.

In 1860, Friedrich’s descendants established a family fideicommissum, an inheritance arrangement intended to limit the division or transfer of an estate and generally keep it within the family. It covered the connected estates of Bärenthoren and Polenzko. Hermann von Kalitsch-Dobritz, a chamberlain of Anhalt, a historic German territory, became its first holder.

Friedrich Jr. and the forestry estate

Around 1884, Hermann’s second son, Friedrich von Kalitsch Jr., took over and inherited the estate. He established the Bärenthoren pine-forestry operation and later became a Royal Prussian forestry assessor, an official involved in forestry administration. In 1891, after taking over Polenzko from his deceased father, he began building a new castle at Bärenthoren.

Last ownership and postwar use

Joachim von Kalitsch (1902–1945), the heir, was the estate’s last owner. He turned the family fideicommissum into a forest estate. After the land reform, a restructuring of land ownership, his wife and son lived in Lower Saxony.

The owners were expelled in 1948. The castle was then used first as a retirement home and later as a nursing home. The German Red Cross care center Marie von Kalitsch operated in the castle complex until December 2019. The Dauerwald Bärenthoren Foundation was established on 2 December 2022 and became the estate’s owner in September 2024.

The estate and its landscape

Castle

The estate includes the castle, a park, and an associated pine-forestry area. The castle was completed in 1892 and enlarged in 1897, 1900, and 1920. A siren mounted on the building alerts the local volunteer fire brigade.

Park and pine-forestry area

The park was converted into a landscape park in 1920, and Friedrich von Kalitsch’s grave lies within it. The associated Bärenthoren pine-forestry area covers 193 hectares.
