History
Awabi Fort is a historic fortification in Oman, located in Wadi Bani Kharus at the head of Wadi al-Fara near Al Awabi. Also called Bait al-Awabi, it stands within Al Awabi Wilayat, an administrative district in Oman’s Al Batinah Region, an area known for its forts, towers, and historic houses.
The 1722 Military Episode
The fort’s strategic importance is illustrated by events in 1722, when Bil’arab bin Nasir attacked and occupied Rustaq Castle. Imam Ya’arub bin Bil’arab, an Omani religious and political ruler, sent approximately 400 men from Nizwa to recapture Rustaq. The force could not advance beyond Al Awabi, making the settlement a decisive point in the movement toward Rustaq.
Nizwa and Rustaq were important Omani centers of political and military power. In this episode, Al Awabi’s position between them placed Awabi Fort and its surrounding area within a contested military landscape.
