History

Alaüddevle Mosque was a historic Sunni mosque in Gaziantep, Turkey, built under the administration of Ala al-Dawla Bozkurt Beg of the Dulkadir Turkmen principality. Construction is believed to have taken place before 1515, the year of Bozkurt Beg’s death. The Dulkadir principality was a Turkmen state in southeastern Anatolia during the late medieval and early Ottoman period.

Construction and architectural character

Armenian overseers directed the building work, including the architect Armenak Effendi and the foreman Kirkor. The mosque combined Ottoman architectural characteristics with features associated with local churches, a combination described as Armenian Baroque Ottoman in style. Its mihrab, the prayer niche indicating the direction of Mecca, incorporated a pediment, a typically triangular element above an opening or architectural feature, along with columns.

Destruction

On 6 February 2023, two consecutive earthquakes damaged Alaüddevle Mosque. The mosque is classified as destroyed.
