History
Adosareyah Castle is an archaeological fortress in Jazan, Saudi Arabia, built during the Ottoman period when the Ottoman Empire governed the region. Standing in central Jazan, it served as the headquarters of the governor of Jazan under Ottoman rule and later continued to be used during Idrisid rule and the reigns of King Abdulaziz and King Saud.
Ottoman and Later Political Use
The Ottoman Empire was a major Islamic imperial state that controlled parts of the Arabian Peninsula, including Jazan during the Ottoman period. Adosareyah Castle formed part of that administration as the governor’s headquarters. Its use continued under the Idrisid dynasty, a ruling house in southern Arabia, before the site entered the Saudi period.
During the reigns of King Abdulaziz, founder of the modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and his successor King Saud, the castle remained in use. In the Saudi period, the Ministry of Defense used the fortress.
Education, Name, and Restoration
The castle also became a place of teaching and religious study. Sheikh Abdullah al-Qar’awi used it as a center for education, study, and the spread of knowledge among students in the Jazan region. Al-Qar’awi was a religious teacher associated with the development of education and religious learning in Jazan.
Traditions give more than one explanation for the name Al-Dossarya. One links it to dawsar, meaning an army unit. Another connects the name with an army of the Dawasir, an Arab tribal confederation of the Arabian Peninsula, led by Prince Hamad Abdullah al-Shuwai’er.
The Ministry of Tourism began restoration and structural rehabilitation in January 2012. The planned work had three stages: clearing rubble, providing electricity and developing the surrounding area, and creating a museum inside the castle.
Remains
Mountain Fortress
Adosareyah Castle occupies the highest point of Jazan Mountain, on a mountain in central Jazan City overlooking the sea. Its elevation is estimated at about 150 meters above sea level. The fortress has a square plan covering approximately 900 square meters, with four massive towers reinforcing its structure.
The site includes a principal facade together with other exterior facades. These elements define the surviving architectural form of the square fortress and express its fortified character.
