History
Château de Kerampoul is a manor in Sarzeau, France, in the hamlet of Penvins in Morbihan, Brittany. Its former farm complex was built in several phases during the thirteenth, fifteenth, and seventeenth centuries, reflecting the long development of the estate near the coast.
Owners and estate development
The Francheville family held the manor and its lands until the sixteenth century. Ownership then passed to the Cillart family and later to the Gouvello de Keriaval family, which remains the owner.
From estate park to protected monument
In 1959, the estate park was developed as a campground after the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, a French motoring organization representing motorists and organizing automobile events, requested a holiday site for its members. The campground was first called Camp de la Madonne, taking its name from a nearby chapel, and was renamed Manoir de Ker An Poul in 2002.
An order dated 24 September 1968 listed the manor’s facades and roofs as protected historic monuments. In France, this status provides formal heritage protection for a building or selected elements of it.
Remains
Manor building
The manor is formed by a rectangular main residential block built with granite rubble masonry and covered by a slate roof. A corner tower stands at one end of the building, where its gun ports, openings designed for firearms, helped protect the entrance portal.
The large room on the ground floor may originally have served as a guardhouse, although that interpretation remains uncertain. A dovecote, a space intended for keeping pigeons, may have been arranged beneath the attic, linking the residential building with the agricultural functions of the former estate.
Estate park and campground
The campground now occupies approximately 6.5 hectares of the estate park. It contains 300 pitches, including 100 for tents and caravans, while the remaining spaces are occupied by mobile homes.
