History
Niğde Castle is a historic fortress in Niğde, Türkiye, standing on the hill occupied by the old city. Its original construction date is uncertain, although traces in the foundation stones are thought to reflect foundations dating to the eighth century BCE.
Early Fortifications
A later building phase in the first half of the tenth century enclosed the castle with three lines of fortification. The complex subsequently experienced extensive damage and destruction in several periods, leaving its history shaped by repeated alteration and repair.
Seljuk and Ottoman-Era Importance
Niğde Castle became more important during the reigns of the Anatolian Seljuk sultans Kılıçarslan II, who ruled from 1155 to 1192, Rüknettin Süleyman Şah II, who ruled from 1196 to 1204, and Alâeddin Keykubat I, who ruled from 1220 to 1237. The Anatolian Seljuks, also called the Seljuks of Rum, were a medieval Turkic dynasty that governed much of Anatolia and established major political and architectural centers there. The castle was repaired and restored in 1740.
Republican Period
During the Republican period, the era of the Republic of Turkey established in 1923, the castle was used as a prison. The castle and its hill are protected as a designated site, and a restoration project for the surrounding area began in 2021.
Remains
Fortifications
The surviving complex comprises an outer castle and an inner castle enclosed by a thick wall. The fortifications are thought to have surrounded the hill occupied by Old Niğde, defining the elevated stronghold through its enclosing defensive structures.
Clock Tower
A 41-metre-high clock tower rises from the castle walls. Ziya Pasha, an Ottoman statesman, administrator, and poet of the nineteenth century, had the tower built in 1866.
