History
Fakhrabad Caravanserai is a Safavid-period caravanserai in Iran, located in Fakhrabad village in Bajestan County, Razavi Khorasan Province. Built during the Safavid era, the period when the Safavid dynasty ruled Iran from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, it provided lodging and services for travelers, merchants, and caravans. The complex also served as a sara, a related term for a travelers’ lodging establishment.
The monument is owned by Iran’s cultural-heritage authorities and is registered as a national monument under registration number 6656. Restoration took place in several recorded phases. In 2023, Fakhrabad Caravanserai became part of The Persian Caravanserai, a UNESCO World Heritage property comprising 54 historic caravanserais across 24 Iranian provinces. The inscription recognizes the caravanserais for their role in cultural interchange and as testimony to a cultural tradition and civilization.

Caravanserai Structure
Fakhrabad Caravanserai is a brick building organized around two iwans. An iwan is a large vaulted space open on one side and is a characteristic element of Iranian architecture. The surviving form therefore combines durable brick construction with two major vaulted, open-fronted spaces that served as principal architectural elements within the lodging complex.
