History
Holy Spirit Church is a small fifteenth-century Gothic church in Bale, Croatia, an inland hilltop town on the Istrian Peninsula. It remains active and preserves a richly decorated interior built from regular stone blocks and paved with stone slabs.
Colorful frescoes painted by Albert from Constance cover the walls and ceiling. On the sanctuary’s side walls, scenes form a Christological cycle, a sequence of episodes from the life, suffering, and glorification of Christ. Above the altar, the Throne of Mercy depicts God the Father presenting or supporting the crucified Christ, with the Holy Spirit often represented as a dove. Frescoes at the entrance show angels and Hell, extending the church’s religious imagery from its threshold into the sanctuary.
