History
Schloss Egmating is a former Hofmark castle in Egmating, Germany, whose present main building dates from the seventeenth century. A Hofmark was a Bavarian territorial estate whose lord held limited local judicial and administrative rights. The castle stands beside the parish church of St John the Baptist and Michael and is listed as a protected architectural monument.
Medieval Origins and Changing Ownership
Egmating was first mentioned in the eleventh century. From 1449, the castle or buildings that preceded it belonged to the Schrenck family, a Munich council family. In later centuries, ownership passed to the Barons Schrenck von Notzing und Egmating, the Barons von Horn, Count Arco auf Zinneberg, and the Barons von Büsing-Orville.
The Castle Brewery
The former Hofmark castle later served as a brewery. On the night of 20 to 21 August 1911, the estate outbuildings of the Schlossbrauerei Egmating, owned by Adolf Freiherr von Büsing-Orville, burned down. Freiherr was a German noble title corresponding approximately to baron. After the brewery was rebuilt at considerable expense, Adolf Freiherr von Büsing-Orville bought surrounding inns to secure and expand its sales. The brewery was sold to the Paulaner-Thomas-Brauerei in Munich in 1927.
Modern Use and Protection
The castle remains protected as an architectural monument, while buried remains of the former Hofmark castle, its predecessor buildings, and Baroque garden features are also recorded as an archaeological monument. A golf course was established on approximately 80 hectares east of the castle in 1991, with full operation beginning in 1992. The facility was founded and owned by Bavaria Golfanlagen GmbH & Co. Schloss Egmating KG, a subsidiary of the Schörghuber Group.
Remains
The site combines the seventeenth-century main building with nineteenth-century brewery and estate buildings, while archaeological remains survive below ground in the castle area. Its position immediately east of the parish church of St John the Baptist and Michael helps define the historic arrangement of the complex.
Castle and Estate Buildings
The present main building dates from the seventeenth century. The brewery and associated estate outbuildings were constructed during the first half of the nineteenth century. Below ground, late-medieval and early-modern remains relate to the former castle and its predecessor buildings, alongside features of Baroque gardens. The castle now contains condominium apartments, the clubhouse of the Schloss Egmating golf facility, and a castle restaurant.
Golf Landscape
East of the castle, the golf facility occupies relatively flat terrain landscaped with extensive plantings, protected areas, and biotopes. It comprises a 27-hole course made up of an 18-hole championship course and the nine-hole Arabella Course, together with a large driving range, a chipping and pitching area, and a putting green.
